Smoke’n Blackberry Sage Margarita

You can have your drink and sage the room at the same time this Halloween with the Smoke’n Blackberry Sage Margarita.

Smoke from the Sage Margarita

The classic margarita is one of my favourite drinks. But today, we will make a delicious and spooky and smoky version for Halloween using blackberries and sage! Yes, get your drink on and sage the demons away all at the same time!

Gather your ghoulish goods!

  • Tequila Blanco (or Mezcal to add to the smokiness)
  • Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • Lime
  • Blackberries
  • Fresh Sage
  • Kosher salt

  • Simple syrup to taste

If you have a Halloween party and want to impress your friends, it’s worth the time and effort to source out some food-grade dry ice to make this drink extra showy. If the dry ice scares you, you can opt to use some dried sage that you light on fire right before serving.

Prepare your sage!

To dry your fresh sage, place it on a paper towel in the microwave for about 40 seconds. It doesn’t have to be completely dry, just enough to be able to light in on fire, so it smokes.

Next year, I’m going to get the neighbourhood Witch to make me a tiny bunch of sage to add to my glass instead of the fresh leaf. That’ll be adorable. It’ll look like a tiny broomstick! (can you tell that I’ve been testing drinks all day?)

To make the Blackberry Sage Margarita, place about eight fresh blackberries into a cocktail shaker and muddle. Next, add a couple of fresh Sage leaves and give it one quick muddle. Just enough to bruise the leaves. Now add your tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and ice. Give it a shake and strain into the prepared glass.

I like it salty!

I like to use a glass with a salted rim, but you could use sugar for this margarita. A combination of sugar and salt would work as well.

Don’t forget the garnish! Since I don’t have dried ice today, I’m using the burning sage. I think it looks both classy and spooky with a few blackberries and the sage leaf on a skewer. Lime is another excellent option. I would even consider using a dehydrated lime if I had it.

Ready to serve? Light the sage on fire and let it smoke as you hand it to your guest and rid them of their demons this Halloween.

Smoke’n Blackberry Sage Margarita

Prep time

Cooking time

  • 2 oz Tequila

  • 1 oz Cointreau

  • 1 oz lime juice- freshly squeezed

  • Blackberries

  • Sage

  • Simple syrup to taste

  • To prepare the sage for burning, dehydrate by placing on a paper towel and microwave for about 40 seconds. It just needs to dry enough to smoke when you light it.
  • Place about eight blackberries in the bottom of a cocktail shaker and muddle.
  • Add two sage leaves and bruise slightly.
  • Pour in your tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice. Add some ice and shake it.
  • Give it a quick taste to see if it needs any simple syrup and add it as required.
  • Strain into a salted rimmed glass and serve with a skewer of dried sage and blackberries or lime. Light the sage right before serving.

  • Don’t be like me and keep lighting your sage until it turns to ashes and falls in your drink! I mean….. I drank it anyway, but learn from my mistakes!

If the drink doesn’t clear your demons, maybe you need more sage!
